"Mexican Boarders" (Friz Freleng, 1962) was one of only two cartoons to feature Speedy Gonzales' cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez. He also made an appearance on "The Bugs Bunny Show" around the same time. Freleng once stated that he found Slowpoke funnier than Speedy, but he was SO slow that he ate up too much screen time. | GoldenAgeCartoons.com

Director Friz Freleng introduced an incredibly forgetful Big Bad Wolf character in his 1955 Tweety and Sylvester cartoon, "Red Riding Hoodwinked". Freleng brought the character back three years later to hunt Bugs Bunny (only to keep forgetting exactly what he's hunting) in "Hare-less Wolf" (1958). In this cartoon, the character was named "Charles M. Wolf", after fellow WB cartoon director Charles M. (Chuck) Jones. | GoldenAgeCartoons.com

Friz Freleng was as much of a perfectionist as he was economical. If a concept or gag worked especially well, he would unapologetically recycle it somewhere down the road. If he thought he could do something BETTER, he took the opportunity. In this complete cartoon (courtesy of the public domain!) Porky Pig is tormented by a nameless cat who keeps him awake at night by serenading him with loopy renditions of everything from classical opera to jazz to early 20th century pop standards. If the plot

Friz Freleng really liked to make cartoons about insects. He once drew the ire of Bing Crosby when he caricatured him as a fly in "Bingo Crosbyana" (1936). He often focused on ants, whether they were raiding a picnic ("The Gay Anties" (1947)) or going to war with Elmer Fudd ("Ant Pasted" (1953)). In one early cartoon, "The Lady in Red" (1935), Freleng used cockroaches infesting a Mexican cantina as fodder for musical entertainment, only to have them attacked by a parrot. In retaliation, the bugs

Friz Freleng was a master of recycling gags and plot points, often adapting them to different characters. In "Stooge For a Mouse" (1950), a mouse plays Sylvester and a bulldog against each other, until the two ultimately knock each other senseless, leaving the mouse free to raid the kitchen. In "Bugsy and Mugsy" (1957), Bugs Bunny employs similar tactics on gangsters Rocky and Mugsy. The final gag in each short involves a magnet.
